The Isle of Wight Cheese Company was set up in 2006 by Julie and Richard Hodgson. Since then, a number of key people have come on board. Here is a run down of the small team involved in getting the cheeses on to your cheeseboard.
Rich is the cheesemaker and oversees the business closely on a day-to-day level. He learnt his cheesemaking skills at Reaseheath Agricultural College in Cheshire under the stewardship of Chris Ashby and Val Bines.
Isle of Wight Blue, Isle of Wight Soft and Gallybagger are all his creations and he takes great pride in making them for the people of the Island and beyond. Rich also delivers the cheese across the Island on a Friday and when not making cheese, sells from Ryde market on a Saturday.
Julie is a partner in the business and is often seen at Newport Farmers' Market on a Friday where she sells the cheese on the stall. She is seen up at the farm regularly, helping with the wrapping, packaging and piercing of the cheeses.
Max helps out with duties at the dairy as Assistant Cheesemaker and can be seen also at Newport Farmers' Market from time to time selling the cheeses on the stall. A very important part of the team, Max also has the crucial responsibility of getting all the mainland orders to the Hovercraft on a Monday morning. If you've bought an Isle of Wight Cheese off the Island then it's all thanks to Max!
Vicky runs the stall every Saturday at Ryde Farmers' Market, just outside the new Co-op store in the centre of town. She's there between 8am and 12.30pm with all our cheeses as well as milk and cream from Queenbower Dairy.
